Kerstin Carson earned a master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS) from San Jose State University. Her academic areas of interest were information organization, description, analysis, and retrieval. In addition to devoting her studies to metadata while in library school, she also completed courses in HTML/CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, and database design and management.

Between 2013 and 2018 Kerstin served the profession of library and information science as a volunteer, an intern, and a fellow. She was a twice-elected newsletter editor for San Jose State University's student chapter of the American Library Association between 2013 and 2015. In 2015 she was awarded a three-year bibliography fellowship to contribute to the Modern Language Association's MLA International Bibliography. In 2016 she accepted an appointment to join the Web Coordinating Committee of the American Library Association's Library Information Technology Association. Between 2017 and 2018, she completed two metadata-focused internships at the Archive of Contemporary Music and at the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. She continues to index for the MLA International Bibliography as a volunteer.

Before pursuing an MLIS degree, Kerstin earned an MA TESOL from San Francisco State University and a BA in ethnic studies from Mills College. As an educator, she has taught post-secondary academic English in four foreign countries, developmental and academic writing online, non-academic English in the US, and she also spent six years as a homeschooling parent.

In her free time, Kerstin enjoys cooking and baking, mixology, knitting, various forms of exercise (including dance fitness), and, of course, reading.
